An Introduction to the Social Medicine Fellows ProgramThe Social Medicine Fellows Program was designed in 2017 to introduce University of Pittsburgh medical students to the teachings of social medicine by offering them opportunities in community-based research, service learning, and advocacy. Each Fellow serves on a committee focused on neighborhoods across Pittsburgh, including the East End, Hill District, South Hills, and Mon Valley. These teams work on projects which promote the ideals of social medicine to establish a better understanding of the social, political, and economic factors that impact individual health. The ultimate goal of this work is to bridge academic medical institutions with underserved communities and expand the role of physicians beyond hospitals and clinics, into the community. On these committees, we work alongside one or more community partners to support community-based initiatives, In doing so, we gain important insight into community engagement in service/ advocacy and lessons in humility as we participate in community-led efforts. -Soukaina Eljamri- Each month we will bring that charge to you by highlighting a different topic. We will highlight student and community organizations engaged in work on an issue and share opportunities for advocacy based work that month. We look forward to your feedback!
